Pre & Post-Op Information

Pre-Operative Instructions


1. Please eat a light meal BEFORE your appointment unless otherwise specified by the doctor. Local anesthesia will be used for all periodontal surgeries, therefore you DO NOT have any food restrictions prior to your appointment. You may drive to and from the office unless we instruct you otherwise.

2. Please do NOT drink or take the following for 72 hours PRIOR to surgery (unless specified by your physician or treating doctor):
    A. Blood thinners (ex. Coumadin, Plavix)
    B. Alcohol

3. If taking other medications prescribed by your physician, continue taking them as instructed. Please notify our office if your medication list has changed, so that we may be properly prepared for your surgery.

4. If you pre-medicate with an antibiotic prior to all of your dental appointments, make sure to do so 1 hour prior to your dental procedure.

5. Wear loose, comfortable clothing so that the blood pressure and pulse (vitals) can be taken and monitored prior to and during the procedure.

6. Feel free to bring earphones to use during the procedure.

7. Please do NOT do any traveling for 7 days following the procedure.

8. Prepare ice packs and soft nutritious foods available at home. Easy to eat foods include but are not limited to: Milkshakes, Jell-O, yogurt, pasta, rice, fish, mashed potatoes, applesauce, soup, eggs, etc.

9. Feel free to call the office if you have any other questions prior to your surgical appointment, regarding your procedure, new medical history information or medications, colds or other ailments. Keeping us updated on all new information will help us ensure your procedure is a smooth one.

*Keep in mind that appointment times are reserved especially for you. If you come in late, the Doctor may request that you re-schedule the appointment and you may be charged a missed appointment fee. If for any reason you should need to change your appointment please provide us a 2 business day notice in order to avoid a fee. A late arrival, missed or cancelled surgery appointment will have a cancellation fee of $500. Please help us serve you better by keeping your scheduled appointments.

Post-Operative Instructions

Proper post-operative care is crucial following periodontal surgery as it will hasten recovery and prevent complications. Our surgical assistants will review the post-op instructions at your surgery appointment and answer any questions that you may have. You may always call our office with any questions or concerns that may come up after the fact. 

For emergencies after hours please call our office at 773-286-4800 and follow the prompt on our voice mail.
